PRIMARY FUNCTION:
To assist the Director of Special Services in the development and implementation of special education programs. The Coordinator of Special Services is responsible for the development, implementation, and oversight of special education programs and related services in compliance with federal, state, and local regulations. This individual will support equitable access to high-quality education for students with disabilities, coordinate Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), and serve as a liaison between schools, families, and external agencies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Hold a Postgraduate Professional Certificate.
- Possess a master’s degree in special education or a related field.
- Have a minimum of five years of recent and successful school experience, three of which must be in a program for exceptional children.
- Demonstrated knowledge of special education law, due process, instructional best practices, and inclusive education.
Preferred:
- Experience as a Special Education Coordinator or Administrator.
- Strong background in program evaluation and data-driven decision-making.
- Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist in improving achievement for students with disabilities by providing instructional feedback; monitoring, evaluating, and improving Individualized Education Programs and intervention processes; and facilitating professional development and community outreach sessions for school personnel and community members.
- Support teachers in selecting and utilizing effective instructional and behavioral strategies through consultation and classroom observations.
- Oversee the referral, evaluation, eligibility, placement, and re-evaluation processes for students receiving special services.
- Assist in coordinating appropriate transportation for students with disabilities.
- Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) guidelines.
- Serve as chairperson for special education eligibility meetings and manifestation determination reviews.
- Serve as the liaison for the Special Education Advisory Committee (SEAC).
- Serve as the Section 504 Coordinator, including maintaining 504 Plans, training school personnel, and attending meetings as needed.
- Collaborate with principals, teachers, school psychologists, and other specialists to develop and implement appropriate IEPs.
- Coordinate professional development and training related to special education law, instructional practices, and inclusive education.
- Act as a contact between Greene County Public Schools and external educational/community agencies serving students.
- Coordinate and monitor alternate assessments for students and report scores.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This is sedentary work requiring stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pulling, routine lifting up to 20 pounds, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and for conveying detailed or important instructions to others clearly and quickly. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken levels and to make fine distinctions in sound. Visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work.
EVALUATION:
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations concerning the evaluation of administrative personnel.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
12-month contract; 8 hours per day
