GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK
The Work-Based Learning (WBL) Facilitator will be responsible for integrating career awareness and WBL experiences for students grades K-12 into curriculum content. The WBL Facilitator will also serve as a career counselor & school-community liaison helping to connect students to employment opportunities within our community. This position will also assist the Career and Technical Education Director with the day-to-day functions of the CTE Department and CTE events.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS
The minimum performance expectations include, but are not limited to, the following functions/tasks:
♦ Developing partnerships with businesses and industries;
♦ Working with classroom teachers to integrate career education into content areas;
♦ Working with high school teachers to create and coordinate students’ work-based learning experiences in the community, including mentorship placements, cooperative education, internships, externships, job shadowing, service learning, clinical experiences, school-based enterprises, entrepreneurship, Youth Registered Apprenticeships, and Registered Apprenticeships;
♦ Assisting with Teachers for Tomorrow experiences;
♦ Facilitating apprenticeship experiences with local businesses and industries through the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry (VDOLI);
♦ Maintaining current knowledge of Virginia labor and employment laws and regulations relating to youth employment;
♦ Managing training agreements and contracts related to work-based learning;
♦ Assisting in planning and conducting career exposure events and other CTE events;
♦ Coordinating elementary schools’ career investigation activities for students;
♦ Coordinating middle schools career pathway investigations for students;
♦ Maintaining a speakers’ bureau list of local business and industry representatives who are willing to speak in classrooms about career opportunities;
♦ Working closely with high school counselors to help students determine career pathways;
♦ Working with the CTE Director to provide work-based learning training for teachers;
♦ Attending VDOE and industry-sponsored meetings and conferences for Coordinators of Work based Learning;
♦ Performs related duties as assigned by the Director of Career and Technical Education in accordance with the school/system policies and practices.
♦ Stays informed of current educational trends and programs for division schools;
♦ Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities;
♦ Maintains licensure at the state and/or national level; assumes responsibility for professional growth and keeps materials, supplies, and skills up-to-date;
♦ Models non-discriminatory practices in all activities;
♦ Complies with and supports school and division regulations and policies;
♦ Maintains proper boundaries with students at all times, assuring respect for the ethical and legal duties in the staff-student relationship and the essential duty to serve as a role model;
♦ Provides a good role model of an educated professional in appearance, demeanor, dress and behavior;
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Candidate must have knowledge of the Career and Technical Education field and must possess the professional and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with school personnel and members of the community. The ability to deliver articulate oral presentations and written reports, and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, school administration, and members of the community is required.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Candidate must be a graduate of an accredited college or university and hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Career and Technical Education (CTE) or a related field combined with experience related to work-based learning.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Candidate must possess the leadership qualities and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with pupils, other teachers, and members of the community. Candidate should be skilled in the use of word processing, database, and presentation software. Must be able to provide own transportation to school-related functions, community agencies, and schools throughout the division. Frequent operation of office equipment is required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/REQUIREMENTS
Duties performed typically in school settings to include: classroom; gym, cafeteria; auditorium; and recreational
areas. Frequent walking, standing, light lifting, up to 40 pounds, and other limited physical activities are
required. Occasional travel with students on field trips may be necessary. Occasional movement of students by
wheelchairs and other mechanical devices may be required. Regular Instruction to special needs children may
be necessary. Occasional lifting of equipment such as audio-visuals weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
Daily personal and close contact with children to provide classroom management and learning environment
support is required. Regular contact with other staff members and parents is required. Frequent contact with
parents by phone and in person is necessary.
EVALUATION
The Director of Career and Technical Education will evaluate performance on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
