PRIMARY FUNCTION

The Health & Medical Sciences Instructor (CTE) is responsible for planning, delivering, and evaluating instructional experiences aligned with the Health & Medical Sciences Career Pathway. The instructor prepares students for postsecondary education and careers in healthcare through classroom instruction, laboratory experiences, and work-based learning opportunities, in accordance with Virginia CTE standards and the Virginia Code.

In addition, the instructor will:

  • Plan and implement engaging, standards-aligned learning experiences connected to healthcare careers
  • Ensure students develop technical skills, employability skills, and industry knowledge
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date student records as required by the Virginia Code and CTE guidelines
  • Integrate work-based learning, career exploration, and industry engagement opportunities
  • Ensure students only perform skills for which they have received instruction and demonstrated proficiency
  • Support students in earning industry credentials, where applicable

QUALIFICATIONS

The successful candidate will have:

  • Professional experience in a healthcare field providing direct patient care
  • A current license, or eligibility for licensure, as a Registered Nurse (RN) through the Virginia Board of Nursing (required for Nurse Aide instruction; preferred overall)
  • Current CPR and Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification
  • A Virginia teaching license in Career and Technical Education (CTE), or eligibility to obtain one

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Health Sciences, or a related field
  • Experience working with secondary students or training in an educational setting
  • Knowledge of CTE programs, career pathways, and work-based learning models

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong instructional and classroom management skills
  • Knowledge of healthcare practices, procedures, and industry standards
  • Ability to integrate academic and technical content into real-world applications
  • Proficiency in medical equipment and instructional technology
  • Ability to build partnerships with local healthcare providers and industry stakeholders
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills

RESPONSIBILITIES

The instructor will:

  • Deliver instruction in Health & Medical Sciences courses aligned with state CTE standards
  • Develop and maintain a safe, organized, and industry-relevant classroom/lab environment
  • Prepare lesson plans that incorporate hands-on learning, simulations, and career connections
  • Promote high expectations for student achievement, professionalism, and workplace readiness
  • Integrate work-based learning experiences such as job shadowing, clinical experiences, guest speakers, and field trips
  • Support student participation in Career and Technical Student Organizations (CTSOs), such as HOSA-Future Health Professionals
  • Maintain compliance with all school, division, and CTE program requirements
  • Track and support student progress toward certifications, dual enrollment, and career readiness goals
  • Communicate regularly with students, parents, and stakeholders regarding student progress
  • Collaborate with faculty, counselors, and administrators to support student success and program growth
  • Assist in selecting instructional materials, equipment, and program resources
  • Participate in professional development, faculty meetings, and CTE program improvement efforts
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by administration

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is performed in classroom, laboratory, and clinical or community-based settings. Responsibilities may include:

  • Standing, walking, and light lifting (up to 40 pounds)
  • Occasional lifting of equipment (up to 50 pounds)
  • Assisting with student mobility or demonstrating patient care techniques
  • Supervising students in a variety of instructional and off-campus settings
  • Frequent interaction with students, staff, parents, and healthcare/industry partners

EVALUATION

 

Performance will be evaluated on the ability and effectiveness in carrying out the above responsibilities.
